Saturn 1B Photos

Back to Rocketry Main Page

Here are several high resolution images of the Saturn 1B that Jay Marsh built using my design specs for entry in national competition, taking first place with, if I recall correctly, 960 out of a possible 1000 points.  I was proud to have worked with Jay on this and hope to be able to work with him again.  I was thrilled, to say the least, when Jay told me that he was sending this model to me as a "thank you" for providing the basic design and assembly instructions.  Jay: Thank YOU!, I couldn't be happier!  Many years later, as you can see, the model is still in Perfect condition!

This model is 1:284 scale, making it (at the time) the smallest scale flying Saturn 1B ever built.  The model is about 9.7" tall.  The engine tube is a 13mm (BT-5).  This is a BEAUTIFUL example of what can be done with a good design and incredible skill!  It is important to understand that, with the exception of the engine (central) tube, EVERYTHING on this model was FABRICATED by Jay,  Right down to the 30AWG wire soldered together to make the Launch Escape Tower.  Truely amazing!

All images are low-res copies of the originals - 1024 X 768 and are about 70KB in size.

s1b_cm_profile.jpg (53537 bytes) Profile closeup of the CSM and LET
s1b_stage.jpg (61037 bytes) Closeup of the interstage area, showing the high level of body detail applied to this model
s1b_fins.jpg (84942 bytes) Closeup of the fin detail
s1b_tail.jpg (74409 bytes) Bottom end-on view showing the engine mount.  This model was flown from a tower.  The fins shown on the model were all that was needed for stability.
s1b_perspective.jpg (69089 bytes) A perspective view showing the whole model (next time I'll use a higher aperture setting)  One key point to see here is in the interstage separation rockets.  You can see the small (VERY SMALL) nozzles in the detail. Something you don't even see in the 1:100 scale kit made popular by Centuri and Estes!
